Yesterday I binge watched the entire first season of The 100 on Netflix. The short synopsis is about 100 years after a nuclear war happens, several thousand survivors are on a space station they call The Ark. Comprised of multiple other stations all linked together, this is a tenuous society. There is a sort of ruling council led by The Chancellor, with The Guard as the enforcement arm. The main notable aspects of the culture there is that one child only per family and a harsh punishment schedule for any infraction. Any infraction over the age of 18 means the guilty person is ejected into space. Under 18 they are locked away until they turn 18 at which time it is decided if they are executed or not. 

Outside of those two elements, pretty standard seeming life in space on a space platform rotating about the planet Earth. The people on the station have no idea what the situation is on the planet. They have some serious engineering issues dealing with life support they are working around and against, and in the light of those decide to send a disposable expedition to the Earth to test the viability of the planet. The people in charge on the station do not seem to have any telescopes, remote devices they could use, nothing like that so they put together a drop ship and load 100 prisoners (all children under the age of 18) and send them on a 1 way, with no radio, trip to the planet. Each child is outfitted with a telemetry armband sending back vital signs, but no way to talk to them. 

Once the drop ship lands, with only 2 casualties the show moves to following the politics in space as well as the brutal politics on the planet while the children work to survive, find food and water, and deal with hostile forces on the planet. 

Season 1 ran for 13 Episodes and once I was done watching them all I found it was a series on The CW in 2014. Looks like Season 2 is already done and so I will be finding it on Netflix or online somewhere before Season 3 starts up in 2016. 

There are lots of good points to the show. Some pretty decent acting, really nice exterior scenes, good interior space station sets, and only a few massive plot holes (like how the survivors on the Earth speak perfect English and why no radio sent down, and no means to scout the planet surface remotely). Looks like it is based on a trilogy written by Kass Morgan. 

It is worth watching to get some good ideas for a post apoc setting or to crib in some ideas for a near future type game. Overall it was worth watching and I am looking forward to getting caught up with Season 2 then onto Season 3. 

So Other Occupations for a Character

Often times in gaming we keep reusing the same occupations over and over. I know as a Player and a GM that the same sorts of people keep showing up, time after time after time. So this list is one way for myself, and potentially you my reader, to include a few different vibes in your game. 

Some games have a limited subset of occupations. Call of Cthulhu is one such game, with a very specific main set of where characters come from occupation wise. This is intended to maintain the look and feel of the core setting. 

Other places I have used to pull in real world occupations are the major job boards and the Occupational Handbook. The easiest way is to log into your account at one of the major job boards (if you have your own login already made) or just put in a larger city in the location search field. So run it and pull in a search of the last 30 days worth of jobs. Copy it all and paste into a text friendly location such as Notebook or the website www.darkcopy.com (my personal favorite).

Copy again into your word processing program of choice to do some cleanup work and if you want to, as I did with a large list one time, put the cleaned up list of only job titles into a spreadsheet program to sort alphabetically and remove duplications. 

Yes it takes a little work, but the efforts can yield a long list of potential different, more modern oriented of course, occupations. These are suitable for modern, near future, and with minor tweaks, far future SF games. The genre does not really matter in the timeframe. These jobs work equally well for espionage, conspiracy, surreal, horror, cyperpunk, superhero, or even urban fantasy.

The following list was pulled from a poem that was published in a magazine. They are all dealing with new ways to move, aggregate, adjust, and deal with customers and people in the online setting. Some are older, such as Copywriter and Brand Agent. Others are brand new and really are less than 10 years old such as the Sponsored Blogger or Notable User.

Some research would be necessary to find out more about the more esoteric ones. Since many of them are new, creations of companies attempting to tame the wild Internet (Used in the broadest term here), others are outgrowths of existing occupations, taken in new directions.

Have fun using them, or finding inspiration for character backgrounds or even entire types of characters in this list.

The End of the Road

Welcome to the End of The Road. This is an ongoing look at a particular genre in the overall entertainment field. It is one of my favorite ones, that oftentimes is not well represented with quality. There is plenty of quantity in the genre of The Post Apocalypse (Post Apoc from here on).

My personal take on what qualifies for Post Apoc is pretty simple. The aftermath of something that has happened that was Catastrophic and predominately Natural or Man Made in origin. So things like Meteor Showers, Nuclear War, Asteroid Strike, Man-made Volcanoes erupting causing Tsunamis, these all qualify as to the reason for the Apocalypse. Other events that could fall in I am not considering. The Zombie Apocalypse I am not going to treat in here, nor am I touching too much on what I term Alien Invasion (typified in movies and series such as The War of the Worlds, Independence Day, Falling Skies, etc), leaving those to their own devices.

So The End of the Road will talk about sources, conventions, stereotypes, tropes, reviews, and original elements for the genre.So grab up your bedspring crossbow and sharpen that makeshift machete and with some roadkill stew lets go on a trip into the Post Apoc.
